The GKS Standards

GKS (Graphical Kernel System) is the international standard for two-dimensional graphics on computer systems. In addition to the advantages of rigorous definition and portability, which come from being an official standard (ISO7942, BS6390), GKS is truly device independent

All drawing operations are performed in co-ordinates defined by the programmer, and a GKS implementation ensures that the picture can be drawn correctly on all available display devices. GKS extends this device-independence to input as well, using the concept of logical input devices that are typically mapped to a keyboard and mouse
